advice welcome

I feel like many of you might be wondering why all the wacky changes have been popping up on my blog the last couple days.... I have been trying to get a "fresh start" on my photography business (now that I am in a new city it's pretty difficult to find contacts since I don't know many people yet). Anyway, I'm in the middle of re-vamping my whole business image and making promo stuff. I also love change so I can't stick with one look for too long. I pretty much love things simple and clean, so I'm digging the new one now. What do you guys think though?

Today I will be heading to my doctor. Have been struggling to get my thyroid medication just right and I would so greatly appreciate prayers that things will go well today and I can get something that will provide more relief from my condition. I have a long drive ahead of me today to get there and I am really, really procrastinating the whole "get ready" part. I did want to write this little post first though, because I felt like I might have scared the ba-jeebers out of everyone with my bipolaristic redecorating on here.

Okay so the advice welcome title lends itself to the opinion of the new look I asked for above, but mainly I was hoping to get some ideas from any of you as to what you might look for in a photographer's advertising. I have always worked by word of mouth and I feel that's the main tool of photographers, but I need to develop some hand outs and cards... so what would strike you best? I'm thinking business cards since they are small and easily distributed, but then again post cards are nice. There will be a new website within the next few months as well, so what are your thoughts on that?

Am I too vague today? Forgive me, there are a million and seven things floating in my mind at this moment. First thing now though... get dressed and get myself to the doctor!

Love the changes. I think photo business cards are a great idea. If you are going to mail postcards, I will send you the addresses of everyone I know that lives where you do!!! Good luck.

I like the new header, very simple and sweet.

Whenever I see advertisements for photography I love to see small children with bright smiles and eyes, it makes you stop and look. I love glossy, bright business cards and I am sure you could get a great picture on there of one of the girls.. and post cards would also be great just because they are bigger and you could put more on them. God will bless your business too and you will do great in that huge new city just be patient, you will soon have more business than you can handle!

as for the thyroid thingy... I have always had that problem and didnt get it solved until I went to see an alternative medicine doctor and I am taking no drugs to solve it either!!

Love and miss you guys;)

i know very little about the business, but of course that doesn't stop me from having a strong opinion. ;)

number one advertising tool: personal recommendations (just like you said)

number two: blog and/or website like you have here

number three: networking with others in the business/area

beyond that, i think it's all about the same. i like biz cards more than post cards because i am more likely to carry them in my purse and pass them on to a friend, but i'm sure there are advantages to post cards as well.

:)

ps praying that your thyroid will start behaving itself.

First, LOVE the new look! Its very clean and fresh, and Austin LOVES clean and fresh!!
I think to work the crowd here, you have to go big or go home. People toss business cards right in front of you, so I wouldnt waste your time. I have even seen people here doing drink cozies with their business info on it! Get super creative...I know its in you! :) I have no doubt you will do great here!! Your so talented and super fun to be around! Who wouldnt want you to do their pictures?!?!

P.S. I have been praying for you and your thyroid. If you ever need prayer in person, you know where to find me! :)
Love ya!

Have you seen Moo cards? They're like mini business cards and are really eye catching.

Plus you can have a different photo on each one, so you don't have to decided on just one design. I LOVE mine and get tons of comments on them.

Is there a field you're wanting to specialize in? Can you approach local baby boutiques about keeping your cards on their counter? Or local wedding boutiques?

I hope your thyroid gets under control soon. I miss seeing you "around".

Happy December!

Hey girl! Sorry to hear you are struggling with the thyroid. I too, have a problem with mine. They make me take a little pill everyday and that is suppose to fix it...however I still struggle with the weight thing of it, and not sure if it is "fixed". I feel your struggle...and hope you get it resolved...I'll definitely say a little prayer for you!

As for my opinion on what you should do...

I think the photo business cards are great...easy to spread around when someone asks and something they can put in their purse or pocket. Always nice to send in thank you cards so they will have it to return to later! etc. etc. Always send more than one and tell them to refer a friend...10% off or something like that for returned business or a free 4x6. ;) Leave your cards in a doctors office. See if you can hang a pic or two at your local OB's office??? Just an idea. :)

I think the most important thing is to get a website going! I also see a lot of photographers are advertising themselves through facebook and then advertising their website from their. You know you get your friends on there...a friend of a friend thing. REFERRALS are definitely the BEST way! But In this day...DEFINITELY...get a website! People see your stuff...you will be super busy before you know it! :)

BEST...Sweetie! Leah

I like your new header - very pretty.

When I'm thumbing through our local Suburban Parent magazine, I see a lot of photographers advertising there. I do have to say, though, that a lot of their ads look the same - not much creativity in their pictures, to me at least. So I would humbly suggest to go for something eyecatching that is not the norm when it comes to the actual photos used on whatever advertising you choose.
